ALICE MILLER

CHIEF FINANCE OFFICER

A Boston native (and lifelong Red Sox fan) Alice Miller has lived in California for 46 years. She is a pioneer of the charter school movement and a founder of California’s first charter school. She has co-founded four charter schools and has served in multiple charter school roles, including School Director, Chief Financial Officer, Member of the Board, and Chief Technical Officer.  Alice was the first employee of the California Network for Educational Charters (CANEC), the first statewide charter school organization in the country. AT CANEC, she served as an organizer, chief technical advisor, regional director, and accounting expert. CANEC created the first charter schools conference, the first statewide networking organization for charter schools in the US, and developed legal, legislative, and workshop support for California’s charter schools.

Alice worked for the California Charter Schools Association as the Director of Knowledge Management, a position she held for 16 years. Serving as the technical charter school expert for CCSA.  Alice was the “helpdesk” for all charter school and staff inquiries. She developed and presented CCSA’s workshops (Finance Academies, Governance Academies, Public Charter Schools Grant, Common Core, LCAP, LCFF, Teacher Credentials, quarterly Business Managers Meetings, and others) as needed. She is the primary author of hundreds of CCSA Knowledge Briefs and developed and maintained up-to-date web content and weekly newsletter information for California’s charter schools.

Alice is an acknowledged school finance expert and created the first statewide series of business managers’ meetings throughout California which provided updated budget and financial information to schools as well as updated regulatory and legislative information. Alice provides personalized governance and fiscal management training to charter school boards and organizations in California. She also works with schools and new school developers on budget development and long term financial planning.

Alice is a founding member of the Board for Voices College Bound Language Academies (a charter management organization) and a member of the Governance Council (MOB) for the San Carlos Charter Learning Center as well as the CFO for the non-profit Miller Institute for Learning with Technology.

Alice has been married to her best friend for 51 years and together she and her husband have raised three sons. She also bakes a mean apple pie.
